So… in our last post we had a little fun letting YOU be the designer and choosing which of our bag samples YOU would choose to grace the pattern cover for our 1st new pattern of 2023, the Double Take. Thanks SO much to everyone who voiced their opinion! Pattern design can be rather solitary work and I REALLY like hearing the logic behind which bag my customers would choose. But as much as I enjoy these interactions, (and I do), this is another time that I REALLY needed to take your thoughts into account because I honestly liked ALL of these bags (and that’s unusual) but what IS usual, is that I was having a really hard time choosing between what I wanted to use, and what would be BEST to choose!
12/7/22 – Wave at Me!
I really liked this fabric and as far as I’m concerned, this Double Take in this fabric is adorable BUT… as much as I like it, I just don’t think it has the kind of universal appeal it needs in order to qualify it as a “cover sample” , so unfortunately… it’s OUT!
But if you like this fabric for a project of yours, it’s available on our website. Just click HERE for more info about it.
12/12/22 – Gustav in Gold
When I first saw this fabric (by Gustav Klimt) and how perfectly it blended with our gold zippers I figured it was a foregone conclusion that it would end up on the cover of the Double Take… but as I made more samples, it just seemed like this one was fading into the background along with the likelihood that it would eventually grace the Double Take pattern cover. In other words it’s OUT, but….
I still love this fabric and if you do too, you can grab some for yourself HERE.
12/28/22 – Don’t Worry, Be Happy
Truth be known, this fabric by Jennifer Heynan is totally in my wheelhouse! I love it and this sample is the one I would most enjoy carrying myself but… as popular & eye-catching as it will probably be on the show circuit, it probably wouldn’t be a bag that most people could picture carrying themselves, so for that reason… it was OUT!
BUT… if this fabric captures your fancy as it did mine, click HERE to pick up some for yourself.
1/13/23 – Color Talk
Now this is one amazingly beautiful sample and indeed many of you favored it as our cover sample in a recent poll. But here’s the deal… its just a fact that black fabric tends to obscure the features of a project. For example, the outer phone pocket of this sample seems to be totally obscured from view… as a matter of fact, even the Closure is not obvious so as much as I love this bag, and as sure as it will be popular on the show circuit, it’s OUT as a cover model for the Double Take pattern.
BUT… this truly is a beautiful bag and if you’d like to acquire some of this fabric for a future project of yours, you can do so HERE!
So that only leaves one choice, right? … or does it?
Why not choose them BOTH?
And you know what?..the more I thought about this…
the better it sounded to me for the following reasons.
- These two samples actually seem to go together. They both have a very similar color palette, and the same zippers were utilized.
- The idea of including two samples on the cover kinda seems logical given the name of this design, the “Double Take“.
- There’s something almost poetic about doing this for the very first time after 50 other published patterns.
So it’s with great pleasure that I now reveal
the official cover for the “Double Take” pattern!
So… did we make the perfect choice?
Truth is, only time will tell! The Double Take design has been very well received so far, and I easily could have gone with several other choices and it probably wouldn’t make a bit of difference “sales-wise” but I’m pleased with how the cover came out nevertheless. With two samples featured, this cover has a totally unique yet cohesive look and and I find it quite exciting for these reasons!
But PLEASE NOTE!!!! — Just as we did in our Katalina rollout last Fall, we’ll be announcing the Double Take pattern release before the end of March by way of our bi-monthly newsletter, Bag Making is FUN. I love the idea of two models. They both complement each other well, so why not?
Every time I look at the “Chateau” sample I think the strap is an open basket weave. I am intrigued as to how I could reproduce that look for real. At any rate, I absolutely love the total look of that particular bag. I also find the peacock fabric on the display bag to be extremely pretty.
I just found your site tonight because of an e-mail I received. What would you consider the skill level needed to make the “Double take” bag?
I shall be back, but right now 2:42am is bedtime for me.
Thank you for a fun few minutes,
Nancy W
Thanks so much Nancy! I actually love working with multi border prints which is what the “Chateau” fabric is. The strap was made from one of the border areas. I’m working on a post about using border fabrics, so you might be on the lookout for that? 🙂
