So…
in our last Houston post I showed you a spectacular group of miniature quilts (which is actually my favorite genre of quilting, but for this post I am highlighting my favorites in another genre I also admire… the “Art Quilts”.
We had a great time working together in quilt class, sharing our love for quilting
as we created these Lily blossoms with the clamshell technique!
This magical village in the tree tops is based on the silhouette of a 500-year-old White Oak tree.
She started this quilt in 2019 during the final days and the death of her father from Parkinson’s & dementia associated with this disease. After the top was finished, it went into timeout and re-emerged again to give me solace during the Covid lockdown, She spent countless hours lost in stitching & memories. She dedicates this quilt to Dad!
Creating this grand lost city underwater was a real adventure. It all started with one fof her hand-painted silks which suggested water. She dove right into this fabric collage challenge in her “Happy Villages: series by creating grand buildings, temples, & columns topped with shells – finishing with the metallic schools of fish!
The name of the background alphabet fabric in the center is Lexington, which is where her Mom was born, Lexington, Missouri. The whole quilt was designed around that fabric & the alphabet. This quilt is dedicated to her & the thought of her Mom watching over her.
As an homage to quilters from the past, she modified the traditional Mariner’s Compass block in an attempt to capture the magic of petals unfolding on giant mammoth sunflowers. In the background, a bluebird serenades his companion at the tune of “O Sole Mio”.

Each of these quilts are true works of art. It’s hard to pick a favorite. I’m partial to “Something Lily” and “Passiflora”.
