Houston ’23: the Miniatures

So… after years of attending and vending at quilt shows, It seems that its the “miniatures” that I find the most fascinating. In fact, I find EVERYTHING about this category interesting and profoundly inspiring!

As a matter of fact, I find them SO inspiring that as I contemplate the time of my life when I stop designing bag patterns and finally retire from the show circuit, I’d love to think that I could spend the rest of my life pouring my creative energy into projects like this! At any rate… I hope you’ll find these projects as inspiring as I did!

But here’s the thing!

Unbelievably, EVERY SINGLE miniature quilt on display this year except for one was created by the same person, (which probably indicates how DIFFICULT these projects are to accomplish)! Kumiko Frydl of Houston, TX is the genius behind these works of wonder! It makes me wonder… did Kumiko make ALL of these since last year’s Quilt Festival? I don’t know, and I can’t imagine how this would be possible, but these three were my favorites!

Kumiko named this creation, “Mission Impeccable“, please remember that the total size of this piece and both of the ones to come is roughly 12″-15” square, which should give you a good idea of how extremely small each of these individual pieces are! It was hand appliqued and embroidered with silk and it was impossibly beautiful!

The name of this piece is “Little Beauty“, and Kumiko shared that she used the Republic of Texas stars for the connecting blocks, but please believe me when I say that the tiny pieces on this pieces were impossibly small, and the hombre effect she accomplished going from light to dark red was absolutely amazing!

And finally, the name of this piece is “Tempest“. To quote Kumiko, she describes it in the following way… “through gloomy, billowing clouds and tumultuous surging tides, a sailing vessel braves the storm.”

And now, it’s YOUR turn!

Can you possibly choose a favorite from these three beauties? And if you could, what question might you like to ask the creator, Kumiko Frydl?

And remember, we love reading your comments and answering your questions too, so please feel free to leave either or both in the space provided below.

Mission Impeccable, I would be very happy to have that greet me every morning and start my day off with a smile at something extraordinarily beautiful.
