AQS Quiltweek Chattanooga- A Banner Day

So…

I’ve made a new thing for our booth display in Chattanooga!

And I’m pretty excited about it! I noticed during AQS QuiltWeek in Charlotte that several vendors had banners in their booth displaying the show pins they had collected from the many retail shows they had vended at over the years.

And this got me to thinking…

I collect show pins too. Did you know that? It’s one of the few things I actually do collect. (My family would have you believe that I collect thimbles, miniature flags & t-shirts, but those are things THEY always buy for me, under the premise that I collect them… but that’s fodder for another post, another day.)

I used to display my show pins on a lanyard/necklace that I wore at shows, but there got to be so many of them that they started popping off and I quit wearing it for fear I’d lose some. Since then they’ve been lanquishing in a box in my studio. I’ve continued to faithfully add to my collection at each show but when I saw these cute pin display banners, I knew what I needed to do….

Like it? Here’s how I made it?

  1. Cut up 72- 2″ X 2″ squares (half white and half purple)
  2. Stitch them together in rows of 6 (alternating the colors).
  3. Stitch the rows together (keeping the colors alternated checkerboard-style).
  4. Cut a diagonal edge into the bottom three rows.
  5. Place banner wrong side DOWN on a thin layer of fleece, then cut fleece so its the exact same size as banner.
  6. Place banner/fleece on backing material, then cut backing so its also the exact size as the banner. Baste close to edges thru all 3 layers.

I chose to make a little tube of fabric thru which I could pass my little banner rod, but you may decide to hang your banner a different way. It’s your choice. Now all that was left was to bind the edges and pin my show pins in place. I think it will make a nice addition to my booth in Chattanooga, no?

I decided to place them all the white squares first, and when I fill those up, I’ll start on the purple squares.  Which brings me to my husband’s question, which was,” What will happen when you fill it all up with  pins?”

The answer? I made this banner with enough squares that I really don’t anticipate filling it up anytime soon, but that makes me wonder what YOU think about this question.

Which do you think will happen first?

a) we use  up ALL the squares in which to place new show pins… or…
b) we retire from the road show circuit altogether?
