PPC31: Butterflies are Free

So…

it’s been quite a few weeks since I’ve shown you anything new in the development of our next new pattern. First I was away for a week in Paducah, KY for the AQS Show. Then, no sooner than I got back, it was time for our annual getaway, but I’m back now, totally refreshed, and ready to hit the ground running! So let me tell you about this sample!

The very instant that I saw this butterfly fabric and its coordinate, I feel in love with it! I envisioned it complimenting this new pattern design beautifully, and that is does… however…

I do have some concerns about how this fabric works with our design, and I’ll delineate those concerns at the end of this post… but for now, let’s talk about this sample!

I chose to use our gold zippers with this fabric and I think the combination totally “works”.
In this series of pictures you can get a good look at the front pouch area which is the perfect place
to stow your cell phone, or anything else you think you might need “quick access” to!

And I have to say, of all the designs I’ve created in the last few years, I’ve enjoyed carrying this bag the MOST! As you can see, it can be carried as a true shoulder bag (far left), or as a sling-style (at center), as a one-shoulder bag, or as a true backpack (at far right). It’s small enough to not get heavy or cumbersome, but large enough to handle all of my daily necessities!

And even though several of you have asked for a closer look at the interior of this bag, I’ve found that this isn;t a particularly easy bag interior to photograph!

The wallet in this picture is what i would term as an average sized-wallet and it can be placed within this bag sideways or lengthwise (on end), as shown here.

And either way, there’s plenty of room for a glasses case (for sunglasses or readers), a tissue pack, a few pens, and some makeup within this main compartment.

So here’s the deal about this sample…

As much as I love this sample (and I absolutely do!)… I’m afraid that the intricate details of this design are lost in conjunction with this beautiful black background fabric. This dilemma is never more evident than in the head-on photo at left above! And unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to discern where the outside Pouch Pocket begins and ends in the full frontal view (above left). I can imagine that this sample will be quite popular on the “show circuit”, because folks (like me). just love a good-lookin’ black bag that goes with almost everything we wear, right?!

And if you find this fabric as appealing as I did, here are the details… this fabric is part of Chong-A Hwang‘s “Wings of Gold” collection and if you like it, you can pick up a Kit which includes 1/2 yard of both the focal print & the complimentary contrast by clicking HERE!

And now, it’s YOUR turn!

I’d love to know what you think of this design thus far, and here’s the deal… it’s long past time to come up for a name for this design!!! So if you think you have a good suggestion, I’d LOVE to hear it! And if you have comments you’d like to share, suggestions you’d like to make, or questions you’d like to ask about this design in general or this sample in specific, please feel free to leave either or both in the space provided below.

Oh yeah, when this is released I’m buying it. Love the versatility.

    • Kat on June 14, 2024 at 8:22 am

  4. Dolores on June 14, 2024 at 6:43 am

I am very much in love with this fabric! Not to worry that the detail is lost in the photo. That could prove to be an advantage, in one way or another. It’s all in the eye of the beholder. As for a name… , maybe Kat’s Bag (since you love it so much – lol), or Roll With it Bag. I’m not very good at naming these things, but I thought I’d give it a shot. Ha!

    • Kat on June 14, 2024 at 8:23 am

Thanks so much Dolores, especially for the suggestions and youre right… naming a bag pattern is REALY HARD! 🙂

  5. Linda on June 14, 2024 at 7:06 am

This is just what I was looking for! Can’t wait

    • Kat on June 14, 2024 at 8:24 am

Thanks for saying so Linda! It’s one of my favorites and I hope it will be a favorite of yours as well! 🙂

  6. Bobette Larsen on June 14, 2024 at 9:03 am

Love it! How about Fly Free for the name.

    • Kat on June 14, 2024 at 9:27 am

That’s an interesting choice. I am thinking about something travel related, so I’ll consider it. Thank you! 🙂

  7. Marcia on June 14, 2024 at 9:36 am

this looks perfect for what i like to carry/wear! i love the hardware ideas for the straps, too! re: the invisibility of the curve, could you have done a piping (either faux or actual) detail? i am looking forward to this one’s release – i’m also big into denim & want to use some i have been hoarding… thanks for this bag design!

    • Kat on June 14, 2024 at 11:00 am

hmmm… interesting idea. Piping might could work but maybe only in certain areas as it could get pretty bulky in the D-ring Band areas! But I’m glad to hear you like it and I’m looking forward to seeing your take on it! 🙂

  8. Rea Standridge on June 14, 2024 at 9:56 am

Love the bag. I like that it can be converted to backpack. Looking forward to making this.

    • Kat on June 14, 2024 at 11:01 am

Thanks for commenting Rea and yes, a convertible bag can be a favorite of all types of carriers
      🙂

  9. Caryn on June 14, 2024 at 10:01 am

    How about Butterfly Backpack?

    • Kat on June 14, 2024 at 11:02 am

Hi Caryn I love the idea of that name,, but…. it could be a bit confusing if we use a sample that isnt in this fabric for the pattern cover? 🙂

  10. Barbara Flowers on June 14, 2024 at 1:37 pm

Love this new design. Love the fabric. You hit it out of the park on this one.

    • Kat on June 14, 2024 at 5:10 pm

Thanks Barbara! We’re all hoping so! 🙂

  11. Anne Mullis on June 14, 2024 at 2:51 pm

    Hi Kat,
You mentioned in today’s newsletter that you need a name for your newest bag. When I saw the additional photos, the first thing that popped into my mind was, “Versatility”

    • Kat on June 14, 2024 at 5:11 pm

Thanks for the suggestion Anne. Its a good suggestion and we’ll certainly consider it!
      🙂

  12. Mea Cadwell on June 14, 2024 at 3:54 pm

I looooooovvvvvvveeeeee this bag!!!! It’s my favorite one yet!!

I was thinking “Butterflies Are Free” Then clicked on the link and that’s what you also called it, lol.

How about the “Affinity” bag? I looked up travel terms and this is what I found:

Affinity group – A group of people that share a common hobby, interest, or activity, or that are united through regular participation in shared outings.

I think it fits since all of us that get your email share a common interest in making your bags.

    • Kat on June 14, 2024 at 5:14 pm

Hmmm….. that’s a very interesting suggestion Mea! We’ll certainly add that to the list of possibilities. I simply MUST make a decision SOON! 😀

  13. AnnB on June 14, 2024 at 7:05 pm

Name: Just Enough. It doesn’t matter if the compartments don’t show. They have blended well to not be obvious in a good way. Beautiful fabric and placement.

    • Kat on June 14, 2024 at 7:52 pm

Thank you SO much Ann! I can’t wait to release this pattern! 🙂

  14. Constance Leverton on June 15, 2024 at 5:26 am

This is the purrfect bag pattern. I absolutely love it and will certainly want to make one.
In thinking about a name for it, I love how versatile it is. It takes on whatever your need might be…backpack, sling, cross-body. It’s almost chameleon-like. So perhaps a name such as “Cami-pack”, “Cami-bag” “Cami-Kat”, “Versa-pursa” (using Versatile), “Versa-kat”.
    Anyway…it’s a delightful pattern.
    Be well.
    Connie

    • Kat on June 15, 2024 at 11:39 am

These names are very cute Constance! Thank you so much for suggesting them. 🙂

  15. Betsy Daugherty on June 15, 2024 at 7:40 am

Love this fabric, it’s right up my alley, everything in m y house is butterflies and I plant everything butterfly outside.
Got to have this fabric. Can’t wait!

Love the pattern also! As for a name how about conversion?

    Thanks,
    Betsy

    • Kat on June 15, 2024 at 11:39 am

hmmm…. its worth considering Betsy! Thanks for your kind words ! 🙂

  16. Grace Shafer on June 15, 2024 at 5:07 pm

That’s the pattern I’ve been looking for! Please don’t change it! The butterfly is beautiful, but there are many other fabrics which will work well, and may even change the appearance.
I’ll call mine Toto, as it will be loaded and ready to go with me everywhere, just like Alice’s little dog!🐕

    • Kat on June 16, 2024 at 1:26 pm

adorable comments Grace! Thanks ! You’ve made my day!
      🙂

  17. Suzanne Beringer on June 16, 2024 at 1:01 pm

I really like the size. Don’t think I’d use it as a backpack. Does it have an inside pocket? I really like having a zippered inside pocket.
How about “Enjoy-a-bag”? Since you enjoy it so much! or “Ador-a-bag”?

I will be making mine with Laurel Burch cat fabrics!

    • Kat on June 16, 2024 at 1:27 pm

Actually Suzanne, I tried inside pockets and I found them to be quite awkward to access. It does have the pouch pocket oon the front which is secured with a magnet snap and a nice zippered pocket on the back.
      🙂

  18. Celeste Ward on June 17, 2024 at 1:44 am

Beautiful, versatile and practical. Seems to “Zip Along” nicely 🙂

    • Kat on June 17, 2024 at 7:00 pm

Thank you so much Celeste! And thanks for the name suggestion too! We’ll definitely consider it! 🙂
